The Cricket Foundation

Our trustees

Ossie Wheatley CBE

Our Chairman is a man with a wealth of cricketing experience as a player and administrator. Ossie, a Cambridge Blue, captained Glamorgan with great distinction in the 1960s and was one of Wisden’s Cricketers of the Year in 1968. He retired in 1970 to pursue his business interests, but has remained closely involved with the game. He has served as a Test selector, and as Chairman of the TCCB’s Cricket Committee, Glamorgan CCC and the Sports Council of Wales.

David English MBE

David brings a formidable range of skills to the Cricket Foundation, being a songwriter, film actor, producer, author, entrepreneur, charity fund-raiser and after-dinner speaker. He has an insatiable enthusiasm for cricket, witnessed by his founding of the Bunbury Cricket Club, and his organization - in association with the English Schools Cricket Association – of the influential national Under-15 Festival and Under-15 World Cups.

Duncan Fearnley

Duncan is a man whose name is known and respected throughout the cricket world. He was a member of Worcestershire’s championship winning sides of 1964 and 1965 and later Chairman for 12 highly successful years in the ‘80s and ‘90s. He also served on the management board of the TCCB. And, of course, Duncan Fearnley established a company that became one of the leading makers of high-quality cricket bats.

Mike Gatting OBE

Gatt’s massive contribution to English cricket is well-documented: as a player, 79 Tests and the last England captain before Michael Vaughan to win the Ashes; 94 First Class hundreds. Since retiring as a player, Mike has remained passionately involved with the game - as a coach, President of the Professional Cricketers’ Association, President of the Lord’s Taverners, MCC Committee Member and a totally committed Trustee of the Cricket Foundation. In addition to all that, he finds time for TV and Radio work and business interests.

Jane Horwood

Jane has been actively involved in women’s cricket for many years, having most recently chaired the ECB Women’s Cricket Advisory Group (1999 – 2003). In pre-ECB days she served on the Executive Committee of the Women’s Cricket Association and chaired the West Midlands Cricket Association. She has also been manager and coach of girls’ teams in the West Midlands and since 1996 has been an umpire. In her professional life Jane is a Superintendent overseeing performance in the West Mercia Police Force.

Norma Izard OBE

Norma has been a leading administrator in women's cricket for many years. She was President of the Women's Cricket Association from 1994 to 1998, and the longest-serving senior England manager, overseeing twelve international tours before stepping down in 1993. She was among the MCC’s first ten female members, chaired the first MCC sub-committee responsible for lady players and has managed three MCC women’s overseas tours.

John Josling

John, whose background is in public relations, is very actively involved in cricket and is especially committed to developing the grassroots of the game. He’s a former club cricketer with Old Albanians and now the club’s President. He has also been a highly-respected Chairman of the Lord’s Taverners, and is currently serving on its Foundation Committee.

Tim O'Gorman

Tim O'Gorman is a former professional cricketer who played for Derbyshire for ten years (1987 – 1996). Since retiring from the professional game, Tim has remained fully involved within cricket, ostensibly within the PCA, where he is currently Chairman of PCA Group, and within the MCC, where he currently serves as a member of the General and Cricket committees and as Chairman of the MCC Young Cricketers. A solicitor by training, Tim is now Company Secretary of The Carphone Warehouse.

Russell Perry

Russell’s active involvement as the Northumberland Cricket Board delegate ensures that the Foundation is comprehensively updated on the realities of bringing cricket to young people. Russell is fully involved in club cricket as both player and coach. He is chairman of a club in the ECB North East Premier League and has been recognized with a Sport England award for services to sport in the north. His professional life involves him in detecting fraudulent insurance claims.

Mike (MJK) Smith OBE

Mike (MJK) Smith is one of that rare group of people who are double internationals, having represented England at rugby union as well as at cricket. Educated at Oxford University, he played county cricket for Leicestershire and Warwickshire between 1951 and 1975 and captained England on 25 of his 50 appearances. His peers rated him the best county batsman and the most straightforward and unselfish captain of his time. In recent years he has been chairman of Warwickshire County Cricket Club and an ICC match referee.

Peter Gale

Peter was educated at Whitgift School and Oxford University and is a chartered accountant by profession. He was a tax partner at KPMG for 16 years until his retirement in 2002. He played cricket at school and club level and has been an umpire in the Surrey championship.

Mark Fenton

Mark has been the head of Dr Challoner’s Grammar School in Amersham, Buckinghamshire since 2001 and coaches the school’s under-15s. In addition to his school commitments, he is heavily involved in cricket in the county, being team manager of the Under-15s, Chairman of the Buckinghamshire Schools Cricket Association and a member of the County Cricket Board.

John Dodge

John, who was born and brought up in Cumbria, has lived in the Midlands since 1979. As well as being an enthusiastic club cricketer, he has given great service to the game in Warwickshire. He’s Chairman of the Cricket Board and serves on several of Warwickshire CCC’s committees. He is also Chairman of the County Cricket Supporters’ Association and of Warwickshire’s Recreational Cricket Forum. In his professional life, John runs an office cleaning company.
